Well, to start off with you should understand the drum kit itself. Whether you are using an online drum maker to make drum beats, or a live drum kit, the basic knowledge is still the same. The bass drum, the hi-hat and the snare are your core drums.

Over 90% of the drum sounds you make will be completed on these drums, so get to know them well! Play around with them. Get to know the sounds they make and how they make you feel. Further, get to know how they can punctuate and underlay a piece of music.

For the purpose of this article, I am going to talk about how to make drum beats with an online system. To play a live kit, you must have it in front of you and be taught rhythm. To make drum beats online, you can be a complete novice and still get it right. So I am going to talk about basics of the online system with you today.

I am going to imagine you have already programmed your basic drum loop, which is the easy part. You can download one, use a collection of samples, or use some raw live audio that is on your computer or a drum machine. It does not matter, although some are much less bother than others.

If you are beginning out, I would suggest using a sample or a download for learning purposes. Learning how to make drum beats is more than just creating a drum loop. You must put your own style into this drum track in order to give it some texture and originality.

Now that you have your first loop in play, you can start chopping and editing it so you can pull out the right sections when you need them. Make sure you have a few extra blank tracks in your project window so you have room to drag and drop beats to listen to in your sample.

You can then separate the percussion sounds that you like. These do not need to be single hi-hat hits since any percussion sound is great and small samples work fine when constructing a new sound. When you have all of these sections you can start to build the new sound.

Generate a loop that is 4 to 8 bars in length since this is an easy number to work with for immediate great results. The final step is to take that loop you have created and lay it over the original in a place that sounds right. Now you have learnt the basics of making drum beats! Well done!

Now it is time for you to get creative and make drum beats all of your own! When you are ready you can make a loop from scratch using your application and then make drum beats that are original and completely your own!

You may find that the final sequence you create needs to be processed in order to weed out any errors. I would suggest you either do a compression or cut some low frequencies using a high pass filter.
